Ford Research Center - Interview with Dr. Niels Pasligh

ICAT is one of the leading centres for testing, R&D, design, development and validation in support of a Government of India funded initiative to develop facilities for automotive testing & development. To meet the challenges of the automotive industry, they need to employ optimization to decrease vehicle weight while maintaining proper strength. For a major challenge for the rollover testing for bus industry, they used Altair Radioss for roll over simulation and Altair OptiStruct for optimization leading to shortened development time for their customers by over 50%.

Alpla develops and produces packaging solutions for consumer goods. Christoph Plankel, Head of Modeling and Simulation Department at Alphla, discusses how they have used simulation to produce lighter packaging without compromising on performance.

During the development of a new carbon fiber bicycle, the design team at Sweden based Rolo Bikes, wanted to develop a frame which exhibited world leading strength and stiffness attributes while keeping weight to an absolute minimum. The team required an efficient process to design the frame and test it in a virtual world against the industry’s safety and performance standards.

Sharma & Associates (SA), a Chicago-based consulting firm that is focused on providing engineering solutions to the railroad industry, led the effort. Since 1995, SA have delivered safe, effective and efficient solutions to its customers, which include the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the Association of American Railroads (AAR), railroads and transit agencies, rail car builders and rail car component manufacturers. The objective of the Altair ProductDesign team effort was to develop an ‘Engineer Protection System (EPS)’ that can protect train crew in frontal collisions (a common mode of train collision) from secondary impact injuries.
