The importance of light weight frames in automobiles is well known but becomes even more important in electric vehicles for direct gain it brings in range. Topology Optimization followed by Size/Gauge optimization very early in product life cycle serves as an effective method to determine the optimal material distribution path and tube sizing at the initial design phase itself so that the frame can be designed at an optimal level before heading to validation phase. It is usual practice to perform size optimization with 1D beam model. However, stresses due to geometric complexities including welds, and joints are not accurately predicted with the beam model and hence the optimization results are in a crude state. The method explored in this study explores using high fidelity durability model to perform size optimization which will increase the accuracy of the results.

Electrification is everywhere! It brings energy efficiency into systems and also helps add new smart functionalities to products. The electric motor is a key element of such systems, converting electricity into mechanical power. It is multiphysics by nature. Electric machine engineers need to take into account various constraints from the early stage of the design, looking at electromechanical performance, as well as respecting thermal and NVH constraints. Simulations need to integrate these multiple physics and also coupling effects. This workshop demonstrates how a simulation-driven design approach to product development can have a drastic impact on the performance, design time, and profitability of a new product. Using a belt sander tool as a demonstration model, our presenters show how Altair’s design and simulation technologies can conduct a concept design analysis and optimization of the sander external housing to improve stiffness and reduce weight. They go on to show how we can simulate the manufacturing process itself by looking at filling, packing, cooling and warpage of the plastic housing; before concluding with a series of stress analysis and validation studies such as a virtual drop test, 3-point bending simulation and even a study of the effect of the heat transfer of the electric motor. This is a valuable session to see how simulation technologies can be used throughout the design process, adding value and reducing development time at each stage. In an ADAS, high-performance CPUs are the central core for decision-making and other high-level system management. To enable various self-driving capabilities, highly powerful accelerators (DLA, GPUs etc) are used. In this talk, we will first focus on the various AI/ML-based ADAS tasks and the underlying hardware used to execute those tasks. The talk will also focus on the fault tolerance and robustness aspects of these systems. Finally, a brief discussion on how commercial software like Altair EMBED and KnowledgeStudio can be used in the domain.
