System Modelling for Electric Vehicles

Electric Vehicles (EV) are complex systems and need to be connected, automated, lighter & smarter all at once. This calls for systems engineering where different systems are seen whole instead of in silos. Experience e-Mobility Simulation using Altair Model-Based System simulation solutions with real-time motor controller implementation on HIL (Hardware in the loop) with the micro-controller. Its intuitive block diagram environment allows users to model and simulate continuous and discrete dynamical systems, mix signal-based, physical modeling and Co-simulation with electro-magnetic & multi-body dynamics. End to end system-level virtual simulation for complete e-Mobility is made possible.

Achieving better Vehicle NVH performance using MSA and RBDO methods

Achieving better Vehicle NVH performance using MSA and RBDO methods

In the context of NVH vehicle development, a common source of costly design change is where issues are discovered late in a program during vehicle testing or even post launch. Often this occurs where the simulation has met the targets including vehicle level analysis. By considering a population of results rather than the nominal CAE result, a process is demonstrated to develop a more reliable design that will deliver high levels of customer satisfaction and lower levels of late change and warranty costs. In this presentation we will introduce how this can be achieved through the use of MSA and RBDO methods within the framework of Altair’s NVH Director environment. How CEVT Improves Vehicle Architecture and Eliminates BSR Through Simulation - Part 2

Improving the ESL using Complete Vehicle Correlation In the previous webinar, the development of an ESL has been shown based on a complete vehicle simulation. In order to validate this new approach, a comprehensive correlation work has been performed. Using the dynamic distortion in all closure body openings as correlation criteria offer a unique possibility to increase the understanding of the load from both the engine and the wheel suspension. This webinar presents this correlation where a test vehicle is driven on different test tracks both in reality and virtually. Presenter: Jens Weber | CAE Engineer, CEVT

How CEVT Improves Vehicle Architecture and Eliminates BSR Through Simulation - Part 1

ESL Development Based on Simulation - Application example The body stiffness has a major impact on the Squeak & Rattle performance of a car. Since the body structure of electrical/autonomous cars will differ clearly from traditional bodies, an enhanced requirement is needed to limit the distortion in the closure openings. This webinar presents a new approach of defining a requirement based on closure deformations using an equivalent static load (ESL), which considers both the reduction from a complete vehicle to a BIG and from a dynamic load to a static load. In addition, an example is shown how ESL can be used as input for body optimization. Presenter: Viktor Jonsson | CAE Engineer (Consultant), CEVT

Achieve Battery Thermal Management System Requirements using Altair CFD Solutions

Achieve Battery Thermal Management System Requirements using Altair CFD Solutions

The operating temperature of Li-ion batteries used in modern electric vehicles should be maintained within an allowable range to avoid thermal runaway and degradation. Poor thermal management affects the charging and discharging power, cycle life, cell balancing, capacity and fast charging capability of the battery pack. Hence, a thermal management system is needed in order to enhance the performance and to extend the life cycle of the battery pack. Altair’s comprehensive CFD solutions provides the complete thermal management using both 3D and 1D frameworks using Altair’s AcuSolve and GE FlowSimulator respectively. Detailed analysis of active and passive cooling methods and, the effective combination of both is in focus. The study and optimization of cooling module design strategy such as coolant type, direct contact or jacket cooling, serial or parallel cooling , module shape or dimensions, coolant flow rate combined with cell characteristics and driving cycles, etc are the key areas of work. The BTMS is of utmost importance to EV/HEV. The webinar focuses on the overview of Altair’s thermal solutions and how the software AcuSolve and FlowSimulator plays a very important role in providing all-round BTMS solution.

Battery & Motor Thermal Management for Electric Vehicles

Battery & Motor Thermal Management for Electric Vehicles

The key element of an electric vehicle (EV) is the battery and batteries are known to produce heat during their charge-discharge cycle. An efficient thermal management system (TMS) is of paramount importance. The battery TMS affects the cost, life, and range of the EV. A battery TMS study or an EV TMS study involves the use of thermal and fluid physics and Altair’s AcuSolve (Computational Fluid Dynamics based Simulation Technology), was used to carry out this study. The importance of finding new methods for effectively and accurately designing TMS that control temperature and optimize the performance of Li-ion batteries. This can be used to study and optimize the Battery Thermal Management System and other Thermal Management requirements arising in an electric vehicle which involves both active and passive cooling. A similar issue of heat (unwanted) exists in Motors as well, in this, we shall cover the Multiphysics simulation of Motors which shall include both electromagnetics and CFD Thermal studies of both air and liquid coolant motors.

NVH Refinement for Electric Vehicles

NVH Refinement for Electric Vehicles

Replacement of traditional combustion engines with an electric powertrain, bring electro-mechanical induced tonal and high-frequency whine noise. In addition, tire and aerodynamic turbulent noise become more prominent in the absence of a standard Internal Combustion Engine. Also, the perceived sound quality imposes a new set of challenges. This leads to completely new methods of NVH refinement, keeping the decades of research aside. As it is important to address these issues at the design and development stage, adopting the new simulation techniques to manage future NVH challenges in e-Mobility is of the prime challenge to the traditional NVH engineers. In this webinar, we shall discuss some of those key NVH challenges specific to electric vehicles and appropriate simulation processes to develop countermeasures.

Webinar: HyperWorks for FSI Simulations

Webinar: HyperWorks for FSI Simulations

Altair’s HyperWorks software suite offers a wide variety of solvers able to simulate complex physical phenomenon, including multiphysics. Therefore, complex FSI applications can be solved, such as ditching or aeroelasticity, as will be shown in the two use cases presented in this 40 minute webinar. Use Case #1: Ditching Simulations with RADIOSS Ditching simulations may be very complex to simulate as they involve a large domain of fluid, complex fluid flow and potentially highly non-linear structural behavior involving buckling and failures. The purpose of the presentation is to show the capacities of the transient dynamic explicit code RADIOSS part of Altair’s HyperWorks for such simulations, featuring the ALE approach, a CEL interface to couple structure and fluid, efficient algorithms such as multidomain to speed up calculation applied on both experimental and full vehicle models. Use Case #2: Winglet Optimization Winglets are intended to reduce fixed-wing aircraft’s drag by partial recovery of the tip vortex energy but care must be taken as potential problems such as flutter and structural considerations may negate aerodynamic improvements. Altair’s HyperStudy software is a tool of choice to design and optimize the winglet therefore improving the aircraft performances. To achieve these results, a process was designed by coupling OptiStruct and AcuSolve to calculate aerodynamic and structural performances. The coupling was then encapsulated in HyperStudy to optimize the design.
